Clinic Today

Today the clinic performs an important scientific and clinical work. In the several divisions a steady rise in the number of handled cases is being recorded, allowing the proper education of students and residents of the clinic. Divisions of different subspecialties are staffed by qualified doctors and nurses with all the modern methods of diagnosis and treatment. The divisions of the clinic are:


1. Delivery-ceasarean room

The delivery room is equipped with the newest technological tools and the experienced and highly trained staff provides high rate of interest in perinatal care, ensuring the best possible result for mother and newborn. Furthermore, the significant rise in the number of births provides excellent training opportunities for trainees, who are performing many operations under the supervision of qualified doctors of the clinic. In addition, in the delivery room midwives train colleges, who are making their practical training.


2. Gynecological and Obstetrical Division

The Division of General Gynecology and Obstetrics is dedicated to offering the full complement of basic obstetric and gynecologic care. The Division is deeply committed to educating students and residents in the clinical setting. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 9.00-10.00 am the Director together with students and residents makes visit trough the Clinic, discussing the clinical cases.


3. Division of Maternal and Fetal Medicine

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division is committed to developing and maintaining a Center of Excellence by providing the highest quality high-risk obstetrical care in a patient-centered environment, while contributing to the academic environment through research and teaching.


4. Division of Endoscopy

The progress in endoscopic methods has made laparoscopy and hysteroscopy necessary in the diagnosis and treatment of pathological cases such as ectopic pregnancy, fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, infertility and more. The Endoscopy Division has developed rapidly during the last years. Furthermore, the residents have the opportunity to familiarize them with the modern techniques of endoscopy.


5. Division of High risk Pregnancy

The high-risk pregnancies are a frequent problem for the obstetrician and often need the cooperation of other faculties to achieve the best result. In the High Risk Pregnancy Division complicated cases which are referred to our clinic (eg twins, preeclampsia pregnancies with other diseases of the mother) are being monitored and treated. The treatment occurs with modern applications and new techniques such as 24hours cardiotocography, Doppler Ultrasound, intrauterine interventions etc.


6. Division of Reproductive Endocrinology

The mission of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology is to provide state of the art patient care with all available reproductive technologies, maintain a scholarly educational program for students and residents, train fellows who will become leaders in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology and conduct innovative clinical and basic research which is internationally recognized. The division provides state of the art patient care in the treatment of infertility including assisted reproductive technologies (IVF, ISCI, IUI).


7. Outpatient Division

Στα εξωτερικά μαιευτικά και γυναικολογικά ιατρεία εξετάζεται σε καθημερινή βάση μεγάλος αριθμός γυναικών με γυναικολογικά προβλήματα καθώς και εγκυμονούσες που παρακολουθούνται στην Κλινική. Προγραμματίζονται εργαστηριακές εξετάσεις, λαμβάνονται κολποτραχηλικά επιχρίσματα κατά Παπανικολάου, ενώ παρακολουθούνται μετεγχειρητικά οι ασθενείς. Επίσης, εξετάζονται περιστατικά που παραπέμπονται από άλλες κλινικές. Σχετικά με τις εγκυμονούσες υπάρχει για κάθε γυναίκα κάρτα παρακολούθησης η οποία ενημερώνεται από τον ιατρό σε κάθε επίσκεψη στο νοσοκομείο. Με τον τρόπο αυτό διασφαλίζεται η σωστή παρακολούθηση της κύησης και αναπτύσσεται σχέση εμπιστοσύνης με το ζευγάρι.


8. Division of Gynecological Endocrinology and Menopause

Women with endocrine problems such as gestational diabetes are diagnosed following regular population screening of pregnant women and receive advice for proper treatment. Finally, older women with endocrine problems such as pathologic entities related to menopause, osteoporosis and other, or pre-existing endocrine problems are introduced with the proper therapeutic solution. Besides the already mentioned commonly problems endocrinologists of the Unit are specialized upon a range of less common endocrine disorders such as those of the adrenal, pituitary, male and female infertility, libido and others. Extensive experience has been acquired in the treatment of surgery-related endocrine problems including diabetes in men and women. With humane care and respect for the patient, the staff of the Unit of Endocrinology, offers high quality medical services with very good results.


9. Division of Family Planning and Contraception

The Family Planning Division of our Institution provides services to women seaking contraception. The staff of the Unit also provides free information with sexual education programs at schools for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and HPV infections, as well as for the prevention of unwanted pregnancy, especially during adolescence. The advisory staff also applies the women in cases of adoption, domestic violence etc. Furthermore, medical students are attending the unit in order to understand the meaning and necessity of family planning as a basic component of preventive medicine. The topics in which the unit is involved are briefly the following:

• History - Demography

• Goals - Modalities of family planning

• Methods of contraception: a) hormonal contraceptive tablets (generally forms, mode of action, indications, contraindications, side effects, beneficial effects, drug interactions). b) Other hormonal contraceptives. c) Intrauterine contraceptive device (generally, shapes, mode of action, indications, contraindications, complications, technique). d) local acting contraceptives. e) Natural contraceptives.

• Surgical contraception in women.

• Contraception of the man.

• Puberty and pregnancy

• Relations between the sexes.

• Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

• Organisation and operation of family planning centers.

• Termination of pregnancy.     


10. Division of Gynecological Oncology

In the oncology unit a big number of gynecological cancers are treated. The modern equipment enables the integrated diagnosis and follow-up of patients with gynecological neoplasms. Once a week, the oncology council which consists of doctors from the chemotherapy unit, radiotherapists and pathologoanatomists decides for the indicated post-or preoperatively treatment. The oncology department has a complete patients archive in order to achieve the best postoperative monitoring.


11. Division of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy

The Division operates every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The staff handles with cervical pathology and in collaboration with the cytology department of the hospital uses all the modern methods for the diagnosis of cervix pathology. The unit has all the necessary special equipment and is constantly updated with new technology. Also, there is an electronic archive which allows the monitoring of the patients over time.


12. Breast unit

In the breast unit all the modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods concerning breast diseases are being used. Furthermore, the unit operates in research and clinical level with Breast Centers abroad.
